Lantern
Tree re-use at Silvertown

2021 - Ongoing
More than one hundred trees marked for felling will have a new lease of life thanks to a tree re-use project.
The tree marked for removal at London’s Silvertown development - due to be felled over the next 10 years – will be utilised for benefit of the local community.
The Silvertown project sees Lantern collaborate with Evolving Forests in partnership with global development company Lendlease to create a detailed tree re- use plan. The project follows Lantern’s successful tree re-use project at Elephant Park, another Lendlease development.
Trees in Phase 1 that were identified for milling, were removed and processed, and left to air dry before being kilned. This timber is now ready to be used in various projects; Lantern and Evolving Forests are working with teams at Lendlease Silvertown to identify project opportunities, including bespoke furniture pieces, that will be installed at Silvertown in public places over the coming years.
In future phases of the project, smaller diameter wood will also be utilised, stored unprocessed and ready for use on site or by community groups nearby. This could include schools-based carving workshops, seating, habitat piles and play facilities.
