Long term sustainability partnership with Lantern

Lantern’s preferred approach is to operate as a trusted independent advisor for its clients. Outsourcing sustainability initiatives to Lantern enables clients to focus on their operations whilst leaning on Lantern to provide the expert external viewpoint. This partnership approach enables Lantern to maintain an independent perspective and challenge its clients – keeping them aware of industry best practice and the views of important stakeholders (internal and external). The longer-term partnership relationship means Lantern has been able to help clients navigate changing legislation and compliance, stay in touch with technology innovation in the field of sustainability (products, building, energy, efficiency), and adapt to new targets and national policy.

The partnership approach also means Lantern has had the opportunity to build relationships with employees and decision makers to better understand how their motivations and goals relate to sustainability. Some of Lantern’s sustainability partnerships are described below to provide an overview of the range of services and support offered:

Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution [Sustainability Consultant]

For RMBI Care Co., Lantern has carried out sustainability audits in their care homes to look at improvements in energy, waste, procurement as well as improving biodiversity in their care homes across England, to voluntary reporting annually under SECR and creating a Sustainability strategy with clear action plan for improvements across all the sustainability agenda. RMBI Care Co. has since working with Lantern, achieved energy and emissions reductions while undertaking a programme of solar panel installations for their care homes. In 2023 RMBI Care Co. celebrated their RCB sustainable bond which will help them develop, modernise and expand their support to the people they care for as well as allow the charity to further develop their sustainability strategy.

London Borough of Ealing [Carbon Management Support]

The ongoing support Lantern provides to the London Borough of Ealing includes ongoing peer review to help with the borough’s Climate and Ecological emergency strategy. The council declared climate emergency in April 2019. Lantern ran online workshops with citizens in order to collect feedback on the strategy and put together a final recommendations review. The recommendations were adopted by Ealing and as a result in January 2021 the Cabinet adopted the council’s strategy with the aim to become carbon neutral as a borough by 2030. More recently, Lantern provided carbon and energy management support for the council, working closely with the climate action team in delivering their £7.2 million Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) funding, focused on six primary schools, two secondary schools and six nursing residential homes. Lantern worked with council employees across all departments as well as external contractors to ensure the projects were delivered on time and in budget and ensured that all parties were communicating effectively.

Since then, Ealing, with support from Lantern, was also successful in PSDS3b with funding of further £13million as well as funding from Local Energy Accelerator (LEA), a programme designed to speed up pace for cutting carbon emissions in the capital and meet Mayor’s commitment to be net zero by 2030. The funding will provide London Borough of Ealing with end-to-end technical assistance and project support to investigate opportunities for local carbon heat networks, clean energy sources, solar PV as well as integrated smart charging for electrical vehicles.

More Lantern Partnership projects are coming soon.
